    Hi, folks, just peekin’ in from the Q&A board.

    biged – I agree with your 5 sentences , but I just had a realization:

    When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them; and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work, because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

    The thing is, this works both ways. It’s usually read as the wealthy having to support the (lazy) poor who don’t bother to work for what they can get free, but it applies the opposite way too. Think of a society in which there is a privileged upper class who don’t do any productive work but just live off the labor of their servants/slaves/peasants/working class who expend a disproportionate amount of labor for the compensation they receive. That’s the situation in more cases than is usually recognized. Here in the U.S. we hire people, at low wages, to do unpleasant jobs that we don’t want to do for ourselves.
