When I was a child my father had a novel called Looking Backward by Edward Bellamy (strange, the things that stick in your memory for 50 or 60 years). Anyway, Bellamy created a future society in which everyone received the same wage regardless of what work they did. Since there were unpleasant jobs that would not attract workers voluntarily, working hours were adjusted. Nasty job=short hours, pleasant job=long hours.

Well, maybe. I think there will always be a division between privileged and underclass, no matter what scheme is used to try to even things up.
