hobbit – thank you for the suggestion, but it didn’t work. I have my screen permanently dragged to the margins of the monitor, so when I click for one or two little squares there is hardly any difference. I’ve always had it this way.

However, I can see whether there are one or two little boxes, so I set it for two and followed your advice. No joy. I think I remember from years ago that when the screen was, um, un-maximized (not minimize which makes it go away entirely), the display was smaller in both dimensions. What’s happening now is that it is full width but only the top half vertically. I can see whatever is in the top half, but then there’s the bar that indicates the bottom of the page. I have to drag it down to get the full page.

This is something new that’s only been happening for a couple of days. When I right-click on a link, I get a menu box with some choices including “open in new tab” and “open in new window”. If I choose window that’s when I get the half-screen. Also, clicking on the maximize box at the top right and then clicking it a second time does the half-screen thing.
