Fall has arrived .. but supposed to have a short “Indian Summer” this next week. Almost all the smaller fires are OUT .. the rain was what the Doctor ordered … a lot at times, but not for long periods. Occasionally will get the “water tossed on a campfire” smell in the air .. still have some burn going on on the two MAJOR fires (Colombia Gorge and South Coast .. will take another couple of rainy days to get them .. but they are mostly contained and many of the firefighters have gone home and will, most likely, stay there as the season is MOST DEFINITELY OVER!

Wish I had more energy, but the treatment just takes the starch out of me …. still have a couple of outdoor chores that need to be done before the big rains hit. (at least the treatment is WORKING for now .. Doctor more than happy with the results.)

  • 08:43:47 pm on September 18, 2017 | 0 | # |

rain again today and a bunch!! (needed) Got over 1″ thus far today with a cloudburst going on right now. More on the way .. most of the fires are OUT .. now the danger of mud and debris slides .. but the smoke and ash pollution are gone.

  • 11:20:08 am on September 18, 2017 | 0 | # |

AND >>>>>> The rain has continued on and off … a LOT of firefighters are now seeing an end to fire season!

  • 05:46:01 pm on September 17, 2017 | 0 | # |

REAL MEASURABLE RAIN … fall is finally here and the smoke and ash is getting washed out of the air … this is going to really help getting these wildfires under control!

  • 09:08:59 pm on September 15, 2017 | 0 | # |

Ran a couple of errands with Brother today .. a visit with the ladies.

While at his place noticed a desk stand microphone at his computer desk. Seems he has utilized the voice command program on Win 10 … seems to be working. The big drawback .. on web searches it uses BING .. so he gets some detours thru “buy me” land now and then and sometimes he has to scroll to the second page before he finally finds what he is looking for … but it DOES WORK AND RESPOND.

The jury is out for now.

HUGE reductions in the crud in the air over MOST of the state .. but Southwestern portion still smoke covered .. visibility at Crater Lake .. ya can’t see the islands from the rim!! BUT, we really have a full scale gully washer building up in the Gulf of Alaska .. may snuff out a lot of the fires .. HOPE SO!! At least here, I no longer have to camp out next to an air purifier/scrubber!

  • 11:15:21 pm on September 5, 2017 | 0 | # |

Been living next to an air cleaner for the last few days .. BORING .. not able to get out much at all .. 90+ degrees and heavy smoke .. ash in a light “rain” on everything .. seems like the world is on fire and if you look at the satellite view of the west, you can see why. MAY be some relief THURSDAY for a few days .. hope so! Had to get out today so went to my storage shed and got some high end dust masks that I had there .. so was able to get out for a doctor’s visit. When you have a bum heart and respiratory system that is not running at 100%, stuff like smoke and ash in the air is NOT good for you.

  • 10:34:38 pm on August 31, 2017 | 0 | # |

air quality is the pitts! SMOKE from the fires in the southern portion of the state and in NorCal. Staying as close as I can to my air cleaners .. but it looks like this will be with us for at LEAST a week and we have a gang of 90 degree plus days starting on Saturday .. we WILL set a new record for 90+ and maybe 100+ days in one year!!! Not the way to celebrate birthday the 80th!

  • 09:22:28 am on August 26, 2017 | 0 | # |

Health update .. Lupron is working! Dr. gave me an injection about 2 months back as the “first step”. He also prescribed an couple of meds (two chemo meds that work hand in hand.) VA wanted another look as they have not approved those drugs .. so went to Portland and they set me up to have a GENETIC test .. because they are “targeting” now with some success leading to better numbers. In the interim life goes on.

So, have a visit with Urologist yesterday .. after most recent labs … MY NUMBERS ARE GOING DOWN .. BIG TIME … with JUST the Lupron and my own immune system … that is the good news. For the bad news, I have absolutely NO stamina. And THAT is not going to change as that is a side effect of the Lupron.

Well, the eclipse was a mind blowing experience! My first TOTAL eclipse and it was all as advertised and a bunch more. The one thing that really stands out is the corona of the sun … when the sun was totally blocked, you could see this halo around the moon .. it was actually coming from the sun itself and it leaps WAY OUT into space. I was expecting most of what I experienced, but NOT that corona! Not that BIG at least.
BTW … tourists on the way home .. freeways are moving a tad slow .. BUT THEY ARE MOVING! IF Madras is any measure, most were courteous and kept the trash at a minimum!

  • 02:25:36 am on August 18, 2017 | 0 | # |

It is getting insane here and the eclipse is MONDAY. Predicted 1,000,000 people hit the state and a bunch are here already. Gas stations running out of fuel .. the highway into the mountains (Santiam Pass) gets sluggish and now and then even NOW. Tourists being gouged for motel/hotel rooms. Lines at MANY drive thru joints. National Guard is already in back up mode and organized. We WILL survive the onslaught .. just hope the “visitors” don’t trash the place up too badly. Been in the “drive the hidden streets in order to get anywhere” mode since Monday .. North/South is cool .. East/West is a toss up.
Me? Come Monday I will walk into the back yard, turn my back on the sun so I can see what the RESULTS are and watch the actual eclipse on my LAPTOP (using my home net!!) NO EYE DAMAGE THAT WAY!!

  • 04:36:18 pm on August 14, 2017 | 0 | # |

Damian .. the really BIG issue for me will be that most of the stuff on the XP box was bought via on line downloads. I have no disks.

  • 08:01:41 pm on August 13, 2017 | 0 | # |

Damian .. for now, I have the manual duplex working in one machine, but that machine is showing severe signs of age. I know I am going to have to do a replacement in the near future (and I will lose a bunch of programs unless I can get them to work by running them in XP mode.) There is a couple of grand worth of photography programs living on that XP box right now. Can’t afford to upgrade them.

  • 11:04:00 am on August 13, 2017 | 0 | # |

Measurable RAIN this AM. First time in over 50 days. Washed out the sky. And dumped all of that crud on the cars. Sooooooo, guess the heat wave is over (for now). BUT, it MAY return in a few days .. they are hedging their bets right now.

  • 01:24:49 pm on August 12, 2017 | 0 | # |

Well, looks like the heat wave is OVER .. it began July 31 with a record breaking high for here .. the next day was just a small amount less (1 degree!) and then the 90 degree days began. Yesterday was the first day this month that did NOT go over 90 .. just 89 ……… TODAY we have a MARINE LAYER that is being persistant.

I was on the road yesterday for most of the day. Had to visit a VA oncologist in Portland .. and the usual Friday in Portland traffic .. took about 3-1/2 hours to finally get home .. a distance of 55 miles .. one 5 mile stretch on the freeway took almost 3 hours to cover!
I learned to drive in LA …. I lived in San Francisco …. Portland has the worst traffic snarls I have ever seen (have driven through Chicago at rush hour … that is a speedway compared to Portland.

Oncologist wants to try something different instead of chemical, meds and such. VA is going to set up the NEW genetic matching system. Worth a shot, since the cancer, even though it has metastasized into my lung, is super slow growing and non life threatening at present. She says it is worth a shot since most cancer treatments can not be used on someone that has a semi-mechanical heart (heart issues).

  • 08:09:43 pm on August 10, 2017 | 0 | # |

OK … I need an older software disk. Install disk for HP Color LaserJet 2840 AIO with a VISTA install. it is N/A at HP and the online substitute is not working (click on it and NAaaaaDAaaaa). If ya got a line on one, willing to actually PAY for a disk that was originally FREE.

  • 01:18:18 am on August 10, 2017 | 0 | # |

Ed .. these are USB Wi-Fi dongles .. and, as to the clean up .. running Malware Bytes takes up nearly and hour in and of itself. Auslogic de-frag/optimize is another program that takes a bunch of time to run. PLUS there is the time needed to update each of the 4 programs .. start with CCleaner, then Glary Utilities then Malware Bytes and finally Auslogic DF/Opt.

  • 01:07:19 am on August 10, 2017 | 0 | # |

Got out for a while today. The care home where brother’s wife is living held its’ annual “Picnic in The Park” at the riverfront park. Nice day. Did NOT get hot until later. Nice meal, nice music, nice people, nice location, weather co-operated (with the exception of the ever present smoke .. not heavy, but enough to be irritating)
Got home and BANG .. another 97 degree day adding to the “consecutive days in the 90′s record that we have already set!

  • 10:10:17 am on August 9, 2017 | 0 | # |

I recently converted my home computers to WiFi wireless on my network in order to speed things up and to get rid of a bunch of wire clutter. This was done rather easily once I tossed the “install” portion of the install disk and just followed the screens.

Well, hit a snag yesterday when I did the usual twice a month dumping the garbage that Windows leaves behind every day. Updated all protection, run AV, malware scans, removed dead files & orphan files, clean out the registry and defrag & optimize … all of the BS you have to go through on Windows in order to be able to use it. MIND YOU, the Windows machines (1 Desktop &1 Laptop) seldom go on line and when they do I do not SURF .. I go to specific sites.
(NEVER HAVE TO DO THAT ON MY MAIN LINUX OPERATED MACHINE as it does all of that itself!)
Procedure(s) took the usual 2-3 hours.
BUT, when I did the final re-boot, I found that the Wi-Fi DOES NOT RE-INSTALL automatically! SURPRISE!!
Not that much of a chore to re-connect, but it really should not be that way!!

That means that every time I shut a Windows machine down, I will have to go through the set up again. PITA … since I have a really convoluted PASSWORD.

  • 10:20:14 pm on August 2, 2017 | 0 | # |

Today was the second hottest day ever recorded here. 107, not used to this kind of heat. BUT the humidity is only 22%. I was bouncing around between air conditioned house to air conditioned suv to air conditioned store … but the space between was like a furnace! To top it off, we have a lot of smoke from wild fires that have been burning in British Columbia for weeks. Air quality warnings over ALL of Eastern Washington!

Follow up:  106 the top today .. started the day with what LOOKED like a marine layer, but it was smoke!  It eventually thinned out, but I am getting tired of coughing.  Outlook is for temps to drop, but only a couple of degrees.  High 90′s for at least 5 more days!

Follow up #2:  Cool off (right!)  97 today.  Had to get out of my bubble .. OUCH!!  Smoke immediately began it’s attack!  Coughing and burning eyes .. got the chore(s) done and crawled back into my bubble.  Now have a major fire east of here in a major recreational area and a MAJOR mountain pass.

Follow up #3 Closer to normal .. 92 .. and the smoke was intermittent, but still annoying as He!!

    (and the beat kept on!!)

9 days over 90 now (Aug 8)  which is a new record for consecutive over 90 degree days .. and  looks like it will continue maybe even till Sunday!!  Bigly picnic in the riverfront park mid day tomorrow .. hope the smoke is not too strong .. it is still there and I feel it, but not as bad as a week ago.

  • 11:47:53 pm on July 17, 2017 | 0 | # |

EBay will now take a pic you upload to them from your computer (up to 12 shots).. No more embedded within the description .. that ceased a while back.

There is Dropbox .. but it is a real PITA to use.

  • 10:21:14 pm on July 14, 2017 | 0 | # |

A shot in the tush (every 6 months) and two new meds .. with monthly visits .. right now that is the outlook. Doc says start the RSO whenever I want to.
Prognosis is I will not have much stamina for a while. (so what else is new?)

Sister in town (actually down the road about 30 miles) so, the three of us went out to dinner.  Been a while since the three of us were together.  Felt good.

  • 06:24:01 pm on July 12, 2017 | 0 | # |

Ed, brother has a care giver 4 days a week now. She helps with his meals, cleans up, helps in bathing and general around the place and drives him to appointments and out shopping. Paid for by the VA. (VA also INCREASED his disability level, so now he gets a bigger check each month.
His care giver is the one that actually got the ball rolling as she was house keeper for BOTH of us for a while. (too busy to help here, but I am able to keep up with things as she helped me organize and my energy level increased after the pacemaker and now the stamina is slowly coming back.)
Will see how things go in the next few weeks .. I will be using RSO (Cannabis oil) (Urologist signed off on that) and that WILL slow me down for a while .. that is a known fact. Since I got it for FREE .. why not give it a try?

  • 10:54:54 pm on July 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

Ed, have gone through a battery of tests and scans .. meet Friday with Urologist for all of the news good and bad and to lay the foundation for what is to come. Have to have help on filling out the “pull the plug” paperwork. This is a “just in case” thing that I want to make sure that everyone understands my wishes.

  • 07:19:18 pm on July 7, 2017 | 0 | # |

Ed, “C” is back. Spending too much time at the doctors. Not sure what next steps will be YET. Should get some idea by the end of next week.

  • 04:58:45 pm on June 20, 2017 | 0 | # |

Damian .. PT = Physical Terrorists!! BEEN THERE!

Results came back. What I was expecting since my numbers started climbing. Doctors in a huddle trying to put together a plan of attack that I will go for .. we shall see. I will NOT let them experiment nor turn me into a vegetable. Fortunate to live in a state where the choice is MINE to make.

  • 12:24:46 am on June 15, 2017 | 0 | # |

Today, they poked a hole in my chest and my lung and grabbed a sample of the growth to send to the lab. AMAZING!! They used a local anesthetic on my chest and NOTHING ELSE. Results in a few days.

  • 06:22:04 pm on June 7, 2017 | 0 | # |

Ed, as my Urologist said, don’t worry about it .. “you are going to drop dead from something else before that Prostate Cancer gets you.” BUT .. they think it MAY have spread to my lung .. THAT needs to be addressed and that is what all of the tests are about .. currently there is just guess work. Next week I go in for some advanced scans (one will take up the better portion of a day what with being knocked out and having to wake up involved in the time frame.)

BUT, I have lost confidence with my primary doctor .. he seems too far out of the loop and he really does not keep me well informed. Sooooo, am shopping for a new primary .. The clinic I want is NOT taking new patients right now, so will ride it out and just call every week until there is an opening! (and VA has moved me to a 6 months schedule vs a yearly visit .. still do NOT want them as primary since I DO have a PAID health plan.)

  • 10:46:56 pm on June 6, 2017 | 0 | # |

Watched the 1981 Houston concert of Journey on PBS last nite. Man, did that jar loose some mostly forgotten memories. AND I had forgotten the EXCELLENCE of the production company (Nocturn of San Francisco). Total emphasis of THE MUSIC and not “the show”.

  • 10:41:05 pm on June 6, 2017 | 0 | # |

Hey!! Yea .. place became like a giant echo chamber!! Summer is TRYING to start .. get a couple of warm days then rain .. Today was nearly 90 .. 65 predicted for tomorrow.

Been getting “stuff” done between doctor visits. Got a huge battery of tests coming up. Cancer has come back and they want to know just how far. NOBODY (including ME)
    is in panic mode.

This pacemaker has really made life livable again!

  • 11:24:02 pm on May 26, 2017 | 0 | # |

Did something I have NOT been able to do in several months .. I actually walked my CostCo shopping in ONE WALK without having to use a power chair or walk and stop and sit and walk and stop and sit! Weather has been INCREDIBLY NICE over the past few days and supposed to stay that way (lo 80′s) until next Wed. The long wet winter and spring are just a bad memory.

  • 08:30:27 pm on May 17, 2017 | 0 | # |

FINALLY … a seven day forecast with NO RAIN!!

  • 12:06:55 pm on May 11, 2017 | 0 | # |

couple of really nice days .. got a small amount of outside chores started (in no way done, yet) and now we get soggy again.

  • 11:45:43 am on April 29, 2017 | 0 | # |

spring … FINALLY!! Next week’s forecast calls for more than “partial clearing” actually a couple of days in a row with NO RAIN and lots of sunshine!

  • 06:27:08 pm on April 26, 2017 | 0 | # |

I sure could do without the rain! Looks like we are about to break another record. We have already had the longest wet season on record .. the rainfall has passed 1.5 FEET over the “normal” for the the rainy season. Only need a tad less than 1″ to break the all time monthly record. My SUV has moss growing in the cracks .. I drive by the car wash and think .. when this STOPS, otherwise wasted bucks getting it clean!!

  • 10:09:51 pm on April 19, 2017 | 0 | # |

I have a major milestone birthday coming up at the end of summer (one that I NEVER thought I would reach.) So, knowing that my health is NOT going to turn me into a 20 year old and having seen what goes on when you no longer have the time or energy to even look after yourself … A lot of visits to various governmental agencies to establish a base line and MY DESIRES. and filling out reams and reams of paper!! GOT IT DONE as far as the government is concerned .. need another visit with my MAIN Doctor at the end of next month to finalize everything and keep it LEGAL as well.

  • 10:39:44 pm on April 14, 2017 | 0 | # |

OK … visit with urologist today .. after 4 – 6 months periods where my numbers went up between .5 and .8 per period, this time it only went up .1 .. during this time I starting to utilize RSO (cannabis oil) but stopped when the heart issue (did not discover that until hospitalized) came up and got solved.
Will see in a while after I make my last follow-up. I will give the RSO another shot.

  • 02:36:51 pm on April 10, 2017 | 0 | # |

you know, I had a pacemaker installed a couple of weeks ago and all went well. BUT, something else ALSO has happened. For years I have had a persistent bronchial cough. They took x-rays, ct scans, whatever and could SEE nothing. this went on for several years (have an appointment with Pulmonary in a couple of weeks.)

BUT .. apparently the inconsistency in the heart beat had an un-observed side effect …. as THE COUGH HAS GONE!

Making me more than a happy camper.

Had lunch at Round Robbin with Bro and his ladies. Felt good to get out … tho PREDICTED, NO RAIN!! As to lunch, even tho the food was above the level of good…..HORRIBLE service! Not the wait staff’s fault as the problem was NOT ENOUGH WAIT STAFF to cover a HUGE area with a SRO lunch crowd!

Visit to my “family” doctor tomorrow and I have to have labs done for a visit to the urologist next week to see how the cancer is doing.

I was fortunate that when I took over my folks finances, the INCOME was fixed from their sources and was BELOW the need to file with the IRS or the State. My direct responsibility was to cover the bills. Hate to think what would have happened had I not come here to help, as mom was the great American Princess and did not drive nor had she ever written a check. Some came out of MY pocket, which was OK as since I was under their roof, paying my share of the household costs was normal.
Mom never actually adapted nor accepted the arrangement completely as she always was a control freak .. then the Macular Degeneration set in compounded with dementia. Their “golden years’ were not all that golden, but I tried to help.

Damin, it gets calibrated in a few days ..

GOT the SUV back and got in a couple of errands and a couple of doctor’s visits .. still a bunch more.
BUT, I no longer feel confined.
Got the visit to the foot doctor and MUCH MO BETTA.

Lunch tomorrow with brother and the girls.

flutelady … Flash is an Adobe program for viewing files. It is severely outdated and Adobe is not spending much to update it .. plus Apple no longer uses it, nor does Linux. (the new system is HTML4 and HTML5.) HOWEVER, way too many are still using it, so you have to go to the Adobe site and update to their latest version.

OK .. went to the cardiologist .. sitting in the waiting room .. I collapse! Conscious all the time … into the horsepistol again (Thursday early PM) BATTERY AFTER BATTERY OF TESTS!! .. Resulting on the installation of added hardware to my bod!! Now proud owner of a combo pacemaker.

Got home yesterday evening … GREAT nite’s sleep .. longest UN-interuppted stretch in MONTHS. A tad woozy at times right now, but just took some of the new meds, so sitting and doing and lining up the long list of Doctor’s visits that I have to do this next 30 days or so.

Lots of changes to meds so I have to get used to them and along with the ticker fixer. Will see if I have the same reactions or will I have to chart some new symptoms?

Caridio Doctor has my SUV locked in his private parking garage, should pick it up and be able to drive after my follow-up visit.

Nothing seriously wrong, that they can find. Seems on again and off again and some strong swings through the comfort range.
Time to see the heart Doctor.

  • 12:39:33 am on January 24, 2017 | 0 | # |

a couple of problems came up during the snow experience .. with my SUV. It started really LEAKING oil (previously just a drop or two) and when I put it into 4wd, the front end became dicey when I attempted a tight turn and things started to rattle.

Took it to my mechanic .. and the report was not good .. seems most of the oil TUBING and connections out side of the cooler needs to be replaced … and every ball joint in the front end needs to be replaced (some are worse than others .. but change one, gotta change them all!) But I will have a bunch more confidence in the ride after the work is done. (awaiting parts delivery from Seattle)

    However .. NOT CHEAP!

Snow is gone .. 50 degrees .. but raining and windy.   Editing .. North of here is NOT as pleasing a picture ….. ice storm has left a real mess .. and not let up YET (supposed to end tonite.) .. then warm rain for a few days .. which will add to the local stream flooding in the Portland  area.

  • 10:22:13 pm on January 17, 2017 | 0 | # |

FINALLY!! It started light showers mid afternoon and the temp slowly started crawling up .. NOW over 40 and the rain is a bit stronger … but further north, not so nice .. ICE STORM .. did not get over freezing temps, so the rain turns to ice .. nasty, nasty, nasty!

  • 10:34:43 pm on January 15, 2017 | 0 | # |

STILL COLDER THAN A WELL DIGGER’S ***!!!! BUT, it IS slightly warming up .. BAROMETER FALLING .. think they were right about rain on the way!
Got out with bro for a while. Did brunch and a visit to his daughter. He is having someone come in and work on her new chair and tweak it as close to new as possible so, did NO work in it myself.

Bought another laptop just for parts .. turns out the only thing wrong with it was an on again off again BATTERY. (and NO HD .. knew that) Did have to dive under the hood (in Linux) to get the WiFi card to run. Been a LOOOOOONG time since I have had to open terminal and type in a bunch of commands to firmware the card…. DONE!!

So, I now have a Windows lappy and a “back up” for it AAAAANNNNDDD an up-to-date Ubuntu Linux lappy to mess around with!

  • 09:09:28 pm on January 14, 2017 | 0 | # |

Portland loot run today .. roads were dry … but both my lot and the auction site lot were skating rinks .. Has not gone ABOVE 32 in 4 days .. looks to be one more day (with a chance of HIGH 30′s) and then a REALLY WET storm will move on shore .. raising temps, raining HARD and raising the streams and rivers.
Getting out tomorrow with bro before we get socked in again. He got a used power chair for his daughter .. MUCH more sturdy than the one she has now … which is looking several c notes worth of upkeep and repairs. I will get it set up for her by swapping out the arms .. have to move the controls to the left hand. This thing BOOKS …. almost as sturdy as bros chair … in really nice shape.

Not a good day yesterday and early today. My FB page blew up! (search: Tower of Power) David was the ORIGINAL drummer and my band (California) opened for them MANY times from Eureka to San Diego .. I was also working back up house engineer at Keystone Berkeley .. and that was virtually their home club ..

Medicare is slow to act on anything surgical other than something out of the emergency room. Took them 1
1/2 months to OK my back surgery, and they waited 4 months to say NO to a corrective eye procedure .. told me to WAIT for a couple of YEARS. (I have an occlusion .. sometimes happens after lens replacement .. it is growing very slowly .. but not enough to justify surgery .. so I look through FOG until they finally give an OK.)
MY BIGGEST GRIPE .. I need hearing aids now .. clobbered the H out of them .. good old rock ‘n roll for 30 years + and tinnitus rules my life now … I have to have 50% loss or more before they will even schedule a doctors visit. (Think I am going see if VA will step in. Worth a try, anyway.)

  • 05:51:38 pm on January 12, 2017 | 0 | # |

My Co-pay on my VA prescriptions goes up by 33% on the 17th of this month .. so I scrambled and got every refill sent off .. hoping that the paperwork would get run through in time … SCORE .. !!!!!! ALL thanks to my Nurse/Practitioner who stayed with it for me!!

Ed, could be the weather .. it has been REALLY UNUSUAL all up and down the west coast and inland. My SISTER is snowed in! In Boise????? Their 4wd ram diesel equipped with chains can’t even get out of her driveway!!

Got a piece of software that is supposed to turn a laptop into a GPS (designed for an RV) .. problem is that the documentation is sorely lacking!! I did manage to get the software to see a GPS receiver .. just that I can’t find the START PAGE!! LOL

  • 11:22:48 pm on January 9, 2017 | 0 | # |

    Ed, yea .. Pavilion dv9000 series ..
one of the laptops has a bad Wi-Fi card .. cost me 4 bucks for a replacement!! LOL

Got all of the updates straightened out and then the MS site sent another 70 or so updates!! NO FAILURE this time.

An FYI .. the new “combo” MalwareBytes has a whole bunch of new programs tied into the original scanner and they are TRASH!!

  • 02:22:33 pm on January 9, 2017 | 0 | # |

Postponing the Portland run .. Not going to risk it as the weather is nutso and people here do NOT know how to drive safely in snow and ice. Managed to get in touch (on the phone) with the lady in charge of our loot and she open ended the pickup until the weather gets better.

HUMONGEOUS updates on the laptop this AM .. which upscrewed a lot of stuff .. (wireless for one) , so running system restore …. and then try the updates again.

  • 10:07:33 am on January 9, 2017 | 0 | # |

    Ed, bought for parts!! (cheap!)
Going up to Portland to pick up a bunch of stuff (mostly GPS stuff). Was going to go up yesterday, but road conditions were horrible. Not as bad now and it IS above freezing and the sun is not up yet. Should be able to get out of here in 3-4 hours and it should be OK. Am going to be on well traveled roads and I am driving the SUV and I have siped tires. (not as good traction as studs, but better than off the shelf stuff)

  • 08:41:46 pm on January 6, 2017 | 0 | # |

Reclaimed the lappy that was out to see if the HD could be recovered. NO CHARGE as the guy had not even opened it up.
Brought it home and pulled the drive out .. then into the laptop I just finished as drive F (D & E taken) .. got into the drive and utilized it to make a back up – restore package.

Doing a LONG format on it now .. will put it into the other lappy and see if I can salvage it. IF SO, will turn that laptop into a Linux one just to experiment.

  • 01:06:33 am on January 6, 2017 | 0 | # |

OK .. got an issue with the rebuild on the laptop scene .. The back-up restore program got lost as I did a cold install of Win7 and it does not have the program .. the program originated in Vista and because the drive that died had it contained in the back up partition. There IS no such program in Win 7.

So, need a program .. brother is using a cloud based system, but is unhappy with it as it is supposed to be automatic, but ISN’T!
    Any suggestion would be appreciated.

IF things go as it looks like they will go … I just may have 3 WORKING laptops when the consolidation is done and the dust settles!!
Got ONE up and running right now and am back to doing the electronic refurbishing of those GPS units. (and every time I have a bunch, I learn something NEW on the procedures!!)

  • 12:54:45 am on January 6, 2017 | 0 | # |

Ed, researched that app … some good and some bad reviews, but in general it does what it says PROVIDED that it gets INPUT from the locals. Not as popular in regions like here as We have only ONE freeway plus a couple of feeder highways. Even Portland does not have a great highway system (that is their problem .. making Portland one of the top 10 congested cities in the country)

Couple that with nasty weather and it becomes a nightmare driving around the place.
As I noted before, I have to make a loot run and have omitted to Sunday, but I have contacted the site and let them know that if the roads are nutso, I will brave the usual weekday traffic mess and go up Monday .. as much as I don’t WANT to!

  • 11:39:45 am on January 5, 2017 | 0 | # |

been a really COLD last few days .. got some snow, most has melted off of the streets .. a few slick spots. BUT Saturday is supposed to be really nasty when this cold spot moves out and the warmer weather comes back … they are predicting an ICE STORM. I need to go to Portland on Sunday .. hope it is mostly over by then!

  • 02:23:10 pm on January 2, 2017 | 0 | # |

SNOW AGAIN!! won’t last, but unusual to say the least.

  • 10:11:37 am on December 29, 2016 | 0 | # |

    Been busy this holliday season.

A MONSTER cold front moving in!

2016 has not been a good year for my brain. Being constantly reminded of my mortality with the passing of SO MANY has not helped. At least, physically, I am starting out 2017 in a much better position than 2016.

  • 03:25:58 pm on December 20, 2016 | 0 | # |

mid 40′s .. only the remains of the snowmen are visible.

  • 12:35:14 pm on December 19, 2016 | 0 | # |

37 of dem grees and RAINING … now that ought to create a mess for sure! Rain gutters are full of UNMELTED snow so it looks like a waterfall!
But UPS now has NO EXCUSE for not delivering a package that was due to land FRIDAY. In that period of time FedEx has been here twice and the Post Office 3 times.

  • 07:59:38 pm on December 18, 2016 | 0 | # |

got up to 34 today .. some minor melting .. this AM had to use 4wd to be on the safe side but streets are relatively clear now. DID have to use it to get into my parking stall because the lot has not been cleared (and think that it WON’T be cleared .. just let it melt .. that should be Tuesday.

  • 05:53:49 pm on December 17, 2016 | 0 | # |

Same story today .. no added snow, but what we have is NOT melting enough to go away.

  • 08:23:01 pm on December 16, 2016 | 0 | # |

Hovering at 32 most of the day. streets got WET (means black ice tonite) ….. Got to the doctor. First time the SUV was put into 4wd in a LONG time. Ran a couple of errands on the way home.

  • 03:33:36 pm on December 15, 2016 | 0 | # |

OOOPPPSSIE … forecast changed .. looking out the window verifies … There will be NO THAW .. not going to get out of the low 30′s for the next three days and to get down into the teens at nite .. and it is SNOWING again.

I have a Doctor visit scheduled for mid day tomorrow …. may NOT be able to make it! Parking lot snow is piling up. Will NOT chain up just for a 20 minute follow up visit .. not that important!!

  • 10:28:28 am on December 15, 2016 | 0 | # |

Storm itself is now over. But there are abandoned cars EVERYWHERE and there is over 6″ of snow on the ground … seeing that it is still below freezing and not supposed to begin warming up until mid to late afternoon .. today I stay in my cave. I MUST go down the hill for a Doctor’s follow up appointment tomorrow .. By then the main roads should be clear .. plus I DO have a 4wd and it has “all weather tires”. AND, if need be, I have cable chains .. don’t think I will need them, though.

Good excuse to stay inside and write up some auctions and shoot some pictures for same.

  • 08:21:57 pm on December 14, 2016 | 0 | # |

Portland has come to a standstill .. people trying to get home .. impossible unless they have traction devices .. and even then, the bottlenecks caused by stalled vehicles stopping them. Eugene (south of here) just slightly warmer .. they are in the midst of an ice storm that has knocked out power in the area. This neck of the woods not used to this AT ALL!!

  • 06:24:37 pm on December 14, 2016 | 0 | # |

Started with sleet just before noon and the temp was 33 plus .. then it turned to tapioca snow for a while .. now it is blowing snow and heavy at times .. temp going down ..30 right now and watching the stuff begin to really accumulate. The word is that we MAY hit 6″ of the stuff before this front moves out!

  • 10:54:10 pm on December 13, 2016 | 0 | # |

Well, we had a couple of nice days .. got out and got stuff done .. but tomorrow .. temps supposed to crash and outlook for snow .. more snow than most people here can handle. (nothing like the mid west and east coast .. but remember this is the RAIN capitol!!)

  • 01:26:24 pm on December 10, 2016 | 0 | # |

snow and ice gone here .. ten degrees warmer than yesterday’s high RIGHT NOW.

  • 03:15:51 pm on December 9, 2016 | 0 | # |

Portland is virtually SHUT DOWN .. over an INCH of ICE on everything. Stuff is melting here as the temps are rising here .. that front has to move North to help Portland (over 100 flights cancelled!)
We are used to rain in large amounts, but ice and snow? As bad as SoCal when it rains!

  • 11:50:13 am on December 8, 2016 | 0 | # |

Ed .. VA calls ME .. no wrong number!!

HEAVY SNOWFALL JUST STARTED! … we were supposed to just get rain here and the white stuff was to be further North .. Oh well, planed on staying in my cave anyway! At least we are not getting the 60 mph winds that they are getting in the Columbia Gorge!

My Niece  has taffy prescribed for her migraines and it appears to work for her. Dosage depends on body size and weight.
I have quit taking it as I no longer have the need .. no more “I want to leave this planet” pain. Do not sleep as soundly, but I get sufficient sleep most of the time.
Still awaiting the final paper work on the oil .. my source is not the most efficient when it comes to paper work .. plus the STATE is slowing things down with their lack of testing/certification labs. Oil has a much higher THC level, so it will be an experiment in dosage to find out what works without zoning me out. I will be taking it prior to bed time to insure that I am safely functional during daytime.

There is another issue in the states where cannabis is legal and that is employment regulations ..employers are still treating it as a class 1 narcotic (which it is NOT) and you can still get FIRED if it shows up in a random drug test.

  • 03:54:14 pm on December 7, 2016 | 0 | # |

MAJOR nasty storm moving in for tomorrow .. think I will stay home and stay warm!

VA has found a new way for follow up appointments. MANY really do not require physical contact unless there are physical issues. So, I have a follow up on a medications change (Good? Bad? No Change?) SCHEDULED VIA PHONE on Friday! How cool is that!!!!!

  • 06:17:43 pm on December 5, 2016 | 0 | # |

squalls moving through! Cold, windy, wet (rain and snow mixed) .. pours buckets .. then it calms and quits .. and then another burst and then calm again .. VERY WEIRD! One of the dying trees in the yard had a partial collapse, but has NOT come down .. touchy though, but if it goes it will fall AWAY from the building as that is the way it is leaning now. Reported it to the landlord, but he already knew about it. He lucked out as IF it goes on it’s own, there will be little or no damage as it looks right now.

Still shopping a replacement laptop .. need it very soon, but am NOT “jumping on the first one”.

  • 11:14:32 am on December 2, 2016 | 0 | # |

Ed .. yea, I might .. but I just got a “dock” and had it hooked in .. and I have been using HP DeskTops for years with little or no problems (except for the occasional hard drive burp.)
I have a couple I am watching right now .. advantage being I can consider getting one WITHOUT drives as nothing is wrong there .. just swap them in.
PLUS, the laptop is primarily just a tool to run .NET programming to service my GPS units ..

  • 09:40:10 pm on November 30, 2016 | 0 | # |

This AM .. the first below freezing day since February!

Got out to take the brother on a trip to see the ladies (with a lunch break) .. and had a couple of errands of my own afterwards.

The laptop I bought just a a few months back died a couple of weeks ago and the diagnosis came back as terminal!! Logic section of the board crapped out. It posts up but stops at the point where it goes looking for the drives! Cost more to fix than the thing is worth .. so, shopping for another. Think I will go for an upgrade this time.
Then sell it for parts like I did the last one (and got more than I EXPECTED I would get for “parts”)

Damian … most of the north plains areas are that way … HUGE drifts! I did ONE winter tour that involved some of that area .. told myself ……. NEVER AGAIN! But the BIGGEST cuts through drifts I have ever witnessed were at Crater Lake in Oregon! You feel like your are at the bottom of a CANYON! Just a strip of blue way, way above you!

Just saw a scary one on tonite’s news .. BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!! IF you find a USB (thumb) drive somewhere, DO NOT — REPEATING — DO NOT PLUG IT INTO YOUR COMPUTER.

IF you do, kiss all of your private info goodby and watch your computer turn into a brick.

Since those drives are so cheap now, they have become booby traps. (by cheap, I just bought a 512GB for 9 bucks!)

Actually some sunshine!! Rather pleasant out there right now!

Brother had to go to a specialist (VA) today .. but the Doctor is in EUGENE! His CareGiver is taking him there.
(he could have chosen one in Portland, but NOBODY really wants to go to Portland DURING the WEEK as the traffic is HORRIBLE. (some of the worst in the Nation! the fact that getting across town requires crossing a BRIDGE some where means that those bridges are bottlenecks!)

Portllandia round trip .. boring!! Got the loot, but really HEAVY traffic for a Sunday .. STAYED DRY!! Not much loot, but EVERYTHING WORKS this time without serious tweaking. Bought a couple of things for ME this time … TOOLS!! Got a battery operated Dremel ($12.00) and an 18v trim saw + saber saw + impact drill ($16.25) in big case!! (do need BLADES for those.)

Right now it is windy, gloomy and wet! Have to go to Portland on a loot run sometime tomorrow .. driven that route sooooooo many times .. really BORING! Not a lot of stuff to pick up, but the auction site will only hold winnings for so long.

They have been at it replacing the “should have been replaced a long time ago” fence in the yard .. this time they are using pressure treated cedar posts along with cedar planks .. and being creative. Not just a straight ahead fence, but some whimsy and out of the box construction. The lower fence should be completed today and next week they will replace the upper fence .. it needs to be higher as it is a NOISE BLOCKER as well.
My stamina is increasing bit by bit .. day by day .. and I can now see me doing some long overdue yard work .. first thing will be the string trimmer to clean out the flower beds …. and did lose a couple of Rhodies and Azaleas with this last summers long dry spell. Will replace them this spring.
Taking brother out to visit the girls this late AM and this PM have surgery on my scalp (local anesthetic and in and out in an hour.

Arborist came by with BAD NEWS. ALL …. repeating ALL of the cedars in my back yard (2 medium sized and 3 GIANT ones (trunks over 3′ diameter) are going to have to come down! Bark beetles have either killed them or are in the process of killing them! They took down a completely dead one today. Thousands of trees in the area are infected. Seems that we have had too many winters recently where it has not stayed cold enough to kill off the beetles so they have just been multiplying. (of course there is no such thing as climate change)

Scareware Alert. There is a massive pop up circulating now that attaches itself to your browser. (it is installed by answering a browser survey for the chance at a $1,000 gift card as a reward) The next time you open your browser you get a full screen pop up (supposedly from Microsoft — Microsoft Official Support) and an AUDIO that threatens to shut your computer off if you do not call the number and get your computer “fixed” IMMEDIATELY! The only way to rid yourself of the thing is to download a FRESH install program for the appropriate browser .. then going into your program files and RE-NAMING your old browser (that naming depends on the browser and is it 32 or 64 (check the support page of the browser you are using.))
Then shut down all running programs and go to that install program and install the fresh version … it SHOULD pick up all of your bookmarks and such as it installs a new core.

GOOD NEWS (for once or twice) …. Call from Portland. The printer is ready to come home! .. NOTHING MAJOR (does need one pigment cartridge NOW) Door that covers the outfeed tray was not “repairable” but, since it is really not needed .. not critical. Will McGuiver it when it gets back and see if I can fix it, otherwise, a replacement is $13.00!!
Will go up for pick up Saturday. (and get a refund at auction house for an item “not as advertised” … GPS sold as powers on that DOES NOT POWER ON.

Ultra Sound went smoothly .. guess nothing wrong or they would have shipped my sorry tush to the Horse Pistol. (follow up early next month).

SNOW in the mountains .. more on the way. It is still wet but not as blustery as it was over the weekend .. the streets were a MESS Sunday when I was out with my brother.

  • 07:23:37 pm on October 17, 2016 | 0 | # |

Sure been a really WET AND BLUSTERY couple of days.

wind-rain … rain-wind .. with a small break now and then .. thus far NOT as severe as has been predicted .. however had a couple of TORNADOES on the coast .. starting as waterspouts. one came directly on shore and did some serious damage in one town .. the second one came on shore and made a 90 degree and ran along the beach with no damage ..

Tornadoes are really RARE in this area …. but they DO happen occasionally.

First tests on the printer says they need a couple of days to see IF they can get the print heads fully functional before they attempt anything else. IF they can’t get them working, no need to do anything else.

Talked to the place where I purchased it and they say a full refund if dead! (nice people!!)

The first “fall/winter” storm(s) have hit. VERY wet out there and windy on the coast. Today supposed to be a soaker with showers tomorrow and then the REAL storm(s) hit Saturday and Sunday.
Have to go to Portland TOMORROW .. lucky me!! Taking the newly acquired printer up for service to the AUTHORIZED repair center .. while I am there, do a small auction pickup. Sometime next week back up to pick up the printer and MAYBE a tiny pickup .. who knows (got to win FIRST!! LOL)

Today have to get out to the Post Office .. did not realize that I was getting low on Priority supplies!! (good sign .. selling “stuff”) and then a quick shot to the market for some stuff that I need!
This afternoon I have a meeting with my source for Pot medicine to set that up for the next 6 months (got DOCTOR’S approval .. will see just how the stuff works as we have an accurate base line to start with.)(Doctor asked that I keep a diary .. not a problem.)

  • 09:07:59 pm on October 11, 2016 | 0 | # |

Ed .. he had to take it apart in order to find out. WE knew at the onset that it would power up but not boot .. he had to go over it. 60 bucks is their flat rate and they are the lowest in town!

They just did my brother’s desktop and they did a marvelous job on it .. then brother picked up an HP touch screen desk top for next to nothing .. they did a number on the thing and brother now has a computer worth nearly 600 bucks!!

This outfit started out by repairing cell phones (only place in town for a while)

  • 07:44:54 pm on October 11, 2016 | 0 | # |

Place all clean (a lot easier for her to do now that I have done some serious re-organizing)
Got the printer into the SUV (covered it with a blanket, just to keep it hidden as not going up to Portland until Friday.)

First major waves of storms to hit tomorrow .. some heavy stuff in the offing Wed & Thurs .. with a partial break on Fri and then two more days of really wet. Coastal surf at 20′ with on shore winds — and outlook for up to 5″ of rain over the same 5 day period. Leaf fall has just started, so could be a lot of blocked gutter drains and minor street flooding. In general, not a nice weekend!

Ed, sold the dead lappy .. bottom line=the replacement lappy cost me 15 bucks!! PLUS the shop charge initially (60 bucks) and this new one has a working optical drive .. the original one did NOT!!

  • 04:33:39 pm on October 7, 2016 | 0 | # |

Ed, no .. I will have help loading it up next week (my cleaning lady) That thing weighs 46 pounds. The shop has carts and help. BUT, I will have to make a return trip as they need to do some minor repair on top of the service …

Auction pickup is from noon to three ONLY.

Don’t mind going back up to pick the printer up .. let them keep it for a couple of weeks and that will make another auction pick up possible.

  • 03:50:17 pm on October 7, 2016 | 0 | # |

FINALLY!! The clean up – reorganization of the media room is DONE (or at least as far as I want to take it!!) I have all of this ROOM TO MOVE now!!

The station for the new(er) printer is all set up. I will take it up to Portland NEXT Friday for service. (and do an auction pick up at the same time.)

Yea Ed!! Doctor has already told me that this is NOT going to kill me .. something else will get me before that happens .. I may be going on to Lupron, but he wants to wait a few more months as there is concern with my heart and the previous damage and surgery. Think he is going to want a stress test and another angiogram of the work that was done to determine the strength of the dosage. Meanwhile, I am going to go into the Cannabis clinic and ask some questions. (he said that he will write the prescription if I want to try that as a course of treatment … just don’t want to be taking stuff that zonks me out.) ONE DAY AT A TIME .. right now, trying to regain some stamina and strength after 9 months of limited activity because of that back problem (now gone) .. the limits are being extended! .. up to the point where I can load/unload my brother’s wheel chair into and out of the SUV .. took him on an appointment Wednesday without an issue and we also went to a Chinese buffet for lunch!

  • 11:09:58 pm on October 6, 2016 | 0 | # |

Ed, yea .. he got glowing feedback!!

Actually this is the Third power brick .. never can have too many .. cuz it seems IF you don’t have spares, you will eventually NEED one! LOL

Not the best of news from one of my Doctors today.. Cancer I had 6 1/2 years ago has returned .. it is slow growing and the bone scan I had a couple of weeks ago show that it is LOCALIZED and has not spread .. he said he wants to redo a couple of tests in 6 months and then he will discuss medications. NO SURGERY .. at least not for a while if at all .. NO CHEMO NO RADIATION.

  • 08:10:19 pm on October 6, 2016 | 0 | # |

Ed .. got the HP QuickDock .. that thing has a BUNCH of functions .. and now the lappy power brick powers it and in turn the dock powers the lappy. Thing has 6 USB ports plus all kinds of other functions, most of which I will, most likely, NEVER use. All I had to do is plug in the cable to a matching port and power up. Now, when I go to pack up, All I do is unplug ONE cable and I’m good to go!! GOOD INVESTMENT!!

  • 11:35:44 am on October 4, 2016 | 0 | # |

Ed .. have to use a standard strip .. it is Velcroed to the side of a printer cart. (being set up to use an Epson 3000 (which is absolutely HUGE!! ) .. my 1800 died and it was cheaper to buy a used 3000 than to get it fixed.)

This move made the “laptop desk” more viable as it moved it to a more convenient location and got rid of all the “across the room” cordage! PLUS, the Epson 3000 is wireless, so LESS CORDAGE at the new location!
The printer has to go back up to Portland, but this time to the authorized service shop to have it cleaned and serviced .. and need to have a small repair. .. but, even at that, I got a $300+ large format pigment photo printer for UNDER $100 INCLUDING the upcoming service!!

Going to spend some time doing something new .. Just for S***S and GRINS, trying to set up a USB thumb drive to run Linux. Have it on the drive already (16GB), but need to “customize” it for MY usage.

Oh, and discovered something about the replacement laptop … the optical is also LIGHTSCRIBE! Nice surprise!

  • 05:44:12 pm on October 3, 2016 | 0 | # |

Ed, just verified my previous post!!! Had a Garmin unit that would not charge using a generic wall wart!! Had to prowl through a “bag of stuff” to get a Garmin unit .. managed to find one with a small footprint and it works (the strip is LOADED with all kinds of devices, so had to have a wart that did not take up two outlets!! Lucked out!!)

  • 04:13:01 pm on October 2, 2016 | 0 | # |

I ran my i1 (Eye One) color calibration tool on the laptop … MAN!!!!! What a difference in the display!!

Ed, maybe get an oem auto adapter? Generics work fine for most stuff, but I have found that on some, they just don’t cut it .. had a large issue with a iPAQ PDA several years ago and switching to the HP/Compaq auto unit solved the problem.

  • 04:02:52 pm on October 2, 2016 | 0 | # |

bought a docking station!! for 11 bucks, worth a shot.

  • 02:54:54 pm on October 2, 2016 | 0 | # |

Ed, EXACTLY! I want that HUB to work like that extension cord! I bought a power block that came with 4 USB ports .. so when it comes to using a port for JUST POWER, that is getting the use .. and the desk lamp I bought is LED and it gets it’s power from the block, not the laptop .. as does the HUB. What I really would like to have is a HUB that passes all of the signal(s) from items such external drives .. only way I can get them to work is to plug in direct.

Thinking seriously about a docking station.

  • 10:48:11 pm on October 1, 2016 | 0 | # |

cmos battery was fine … (checked it with the Fluke) .. just that the thing had not been USED since 2012. Once I got the date and time entered into bios, everything worked.

One question since you the laptop expert dujur!! I have a powered USB hub that works fine except that some items just do not work right when plugged in (IE .. my GPS units .. have to go direct) IS THERE A HUB out there that will channel everything or am I out of luck there and will continue to have to plug and unplug items?

  • 08:36:29 pm on October 1, 2016 | 0 | # |

ED, YEP!! and in really nice shape. Dropped the drive and battery in and it was off and running.
Had an issue and it was a head AND butt scratcher! . It did not want to go to any sites .. got a “faulty certificate” message from almost every where .. then I got a message that the certificate would not be valid “UNTIL Feb 2016″ ….. hmmm
That sent me to the bios settings and sure enough, the laptop was living in 2012! Re-set and all is well.
Now getting caught up since the HD was virtually inactive for over a month and there have been the usual flow of updates on almost everything and I need to get that done …. but first had to make sure my GPS programs were still functional .. THEY ARE!!

(OH & BTW … the internal optical drive on this one WORKS!!

  • 12:59:30 am on October 1, 2016 | 0 | # |

Damian, that ought to drive a lot of people to Linux. Since it is now no longer “for geeks only”, but a system that is easy to use. (I have not had to “go under the hood” for YEARS!)

  • 12:06:31 pm on September 30, 2016 | 0 | # |

tracking sez that my replacement laptop should be here tomorrow. We shall see.
Took the dead one apart .. removed the hard drive, optical drive/burner. Left the memory in it as the replacement has the same amount (4gb)

Talking to the tech yesterday .. he noted that from what he has read and heard that Windows 10 is going to be the last FULL operating system that Microsoft is ever going to build. They are just going to use patches to update it and add features. Good luck with that.

  • 02:35:12 pm on September 28, 2016 | 0 | # |

verdict on the lappy .. terminal! Cracked mother board! Just bid and won a like unit .. when it arrives all I do is put in the drive from the dead lappy, put in the battery from it too (one I bought does not have a battery but does run off of shore power) AND THE DVDRW works on the one I just bought. Should be up and running by early next week.

  • 10:49:38 pm on September 23, 2016 | 0 | # |

built in obsolescence .. typical .. just another reason to use Linux .. they still have drivers for dot matrix and daisy wheel printers!! (wouldn’t want to print at that speed .. but the drivers are still available for them!)

Oh . and the copyright is the day the manual was FIRST PUBLISHED, not when it was sold.

Had a dermatologist appointment today .. he was NOT happy .. everything else is healing but the wrapper .. they did a biopsy .. results in a couple of weeks.

  • 01:55:12 pm on September 23, 2016 | 0 | # |

just checked .. I use XSane in Ubuntu for scanning, turns out there is a version for Windows. you might give that a shot.

  • 01:48:10 pm on September 23, 2016 | 0 | # |

Damian, look into open source programs for the scanner. Same with printer drivers. Think there is a version of CUPS for Windows. CUPS is the system I use for my printers on my Ubuntu (maintained by Apple, believe it or not!) .. but they DO drop the ball now and then. My laser has two forms in Windows .. one color and one black only .. CUPS has the color but NOT the black. So I print my shipping labels through Windows to save on toner!

  • 07:39:25 am on September 23, 2016 | 0 | # |

Ed .. it could be Win7 … I lost my internal optical when I installed it on the laptop and NEVER got it back.

But, Win10 is not all joy, either. Brother wishes he had never installed it. The learning curve is steeper than the curve for a 10 year old Red Hat Linux!

  • 08:00:57 pm on September 22, 2016 | 0 | # |

Ed .. see if you can get current drivers for that wireless card .. uninstall and re install.

  • 08:50:09 am on September 22, 2016 | 0 | # |

Not in a super rush to get the lappy back on line ….. just want to know where I stand on it .. should know by tomorrow. Then will plan an actual course of action .. replace with like or do an upgrade at the same time. In reality, the primary function originally and STILL is to be able to run MS system so I can run the .net framework to service GPS units. I just added the bells and whistles because I COULD.

  • 11:50:15 pm on September 21, 2016 | 0 | # |

Had a follow up on my back surgery today. She is very pleased. I asked about lifting limits .. and she bumped it up to 20 lbs and I can increase slowly so that in 2 months it will be at about 40 lbs. DO still have some minor swelling.
I am more than happy with the outcome thus far.

Still have a couple of “OTHER” doctors and tests to do for the yearly visits. Bone Density tomorrow to check and see if any of my various cancers is spreading or not.

Have a lot of energy now .. not lethargic … that has gone. Trouble is, I have been so restricted for such a long time that I don’t have the physical strength ..

Am really doing a number on my place… re organizing and cleaning up a lot of clutter, but the legs and back get “achy” so I have to take breaks (a lot of them and a for longer periods of time.) SHOWING PROGRESS .. still will be days before I get the place back into shape.

That large format photo printer I bought needs some work that I can NOT do and there was some damage that was NOT observable, (Bought it as is .. 30 bucks.)
So will be taking it back to Portland (only authorized shop in the state) to get it repaired and serviced. 60 bucks plus parts is not a bad quote and then I will have a REFURBISHED printer that is worth a tad back from 500 bucks and have a grand total of 90 bucks tied up in it!
AND I decided to take the laptop in .. They will let me know if it is REPAIRABLE .. if it is the BIOS chip, the answer will be NO .. and they will salvage what they can (mostly the HD) and I will sell it for parts.
Still shopping and MAY still have to replace it. Will wait and see.

BunderThumpers ..cable has been hit several times shutting off and then back on .. Video, Internet and my land line bouncing around.

  • 02:33:46 am on September 19, 2016 | 0 | # |

lighterlady, the week before Woodstock, I worked a show with Santana in Monterey .. right after that gig, they climbed on to their band bus and drove to Woodstock. (I had two shows to do on that same weekend as Woodstock, so stayed in Monterey!) Hugh and the crew from the Hog Farm also had their own bus. They went to Woodstock to act as para-medics. It was a crazy time, for sure.

  • 12:35:40 am on September 19, 2016 | 0 | # |

It was a good run .. light spritzes and damp windshield but DRY when I was doing the load up.
Brother had a painting that IF it was 1/2″ taller would NOT have loaded .. skin of my teeth to get it to slide in . BUT IT DID!!
That printer is going to need some SERIOUS cleaning, but it does have some pigment in all of the cartridges. Have to have help getting it in as it is WELL above my lift weight limit for now.
For grins, I bid on and won an older Epson p-5000 “multimedia storage viewer”. Previous owner left it LOADED with several HUNDRED albums and HUNDREDS of photos .. took forever to clear it out (for some reason, you have to delete each folder of photos and there was over 100 of them.
Neat concept .. take your photo card or your phone and plug it in and down load! Serves as a really nice “contact page” for editing .. nice piece of pro gear discovered by accident. (60g of storage!)

BUT, the trip really tired me out! came home and took a LONG nap!

  • 08:07:05 pm on September 17, 2016 | 0 | # |

At least that worked! Got the boot order changed, but it boots to a screen that is totally unreadable! Shut down and tried again and got NOTHING .. not even a splash screen for a HUGE amount of time, then the splash. then to a totally blank screen! This is nutso!! I think this is an indication that the lappy has become a brick!!

It has rained all day .. REALLY LIGHT but cumulatively VERY WET DAY. Hope it stops (forecast says it will) as I have the Portland run to do tomorrow …
Yes, will wear a back brace “just in case”. Lot of stuff to pick up. None heavy with the exception of a large format photo printer with a low page count (that I got for an out of bounds cheap bid!)(better than 300 bucks LESS than what they go for on EBay!)
Even if it is out of pigment, one monster deal.

  • 01:12:21 pm on September 17, 2016 | 0 | # |

    Ed, no joy!

This is an HP Pavillion dv 9000

  • 02:05:20 am on September 17, 2016 | 0 | # |

Ed .. f2 took me to disk check .. f12 would not even launch.

lighterlady, Hugh has a “Wavy Gravy” page on Facebook but is really erratic on visiting and posting. Still running his camp for kids in the summer .. Camp Win A Rainbow .. but like me, age is beginning to catch up and he is slowing down.

  • 06:03:10 pm on September 16, 2016 | 0 | # |

Ed, it is really messed up! Boot screen comes up but NONE of the f keys are working! Been researching and found at least a dozen different “fix-ups” NONE of them worked.

I have a flash with Ubuntu on it and was going to use that to test and recover .. can’t change the boot order.

This is not an immediate issue, but the clock is ticking.
I’ll get it happening one way or another.

  • 02:52:47 pm on September 15, 2016 | 0 | # |

Laptop HD crashed. Get the thing to start to boot up and then stalls .. ran the check and it does not see a drive.
NO data stored, just programs on it .. and all but the OS were FREE programs.
So .. the internal debate now goes on .. will it be cheaper to buy another laptop, OR get it fixed .. it leans towards BUYING. Am watching a newer model with faster processor, 4g memory and 500g hd PLUS newer video drivers … IF I can get it for just a few bucks over what it would cost to repair and buy/install a new drive, most likely will go that way.
But, sure would like to recover that drive in some way and save the HOURS I spent setting it up!

  • 11:48:44 am on September 13, 2016 | 0 | # |

Forced myself to get up and walk a bunch yesterday .. think I might have overdone it as had LEG CRAMPS last nite .. water and Tylenol helped, but not completely. The improvement, however, continues..

  • 01:19:12 pm on September 12, 2016 | 0 | # |

I can not believe the difference! Some leg issues I attributed to NEUROPATHY .. were not! I am getting sensations back in BOTH legs and feet that I have not had for several YEARS! The lady knows her stuff. Pain? yea, in the a** from sitting too much, (not really).
About ready to cut back the wacky taffy AGAIN! .. only using it as a nighttime sleeping aid. A single Tylenol in the daytime does the job now!

  • 07:09:50 pm on September 10, 2016 | 0 | # |

Update: back down to the once a day night time sleep aid! Some minor swelling and discomfort, but getting more and more functional as the hours pass!
I will have to sneak out Monday and drop off a package at FedEx .. so, while I am at it .. need to hit the market for some supplies and staple goodies

  • 06:05:49 pm on September 9, 2016 | 0 | # |

    Nice Strat, Damian … LOL

Ed, I quadrupled the dosage the first day. Then I cut back 25% each day. goal = NONE. (that may take a few extra days).

  • 03:24:01 pm on September 9, 2016 | 0 | # |

Doctor happy with my progress . I am happy with my progress . starting to cut back on medications . sore, but NO SHARP PAIN . and some sensation returning to my legs. I figure it will NEVER be 100%, but ANYTHING will help.

Lift limit is 10 lbs right now and NO DRIVING for a week plus .. I DO have to make a Portland run SOON!

  • 10:15:20 pm on September 6, 2016 | 0 | # |

Yep .. home .. it went well .. surprised the Doctor as she was expecting to have me stay a night. My usual thing with most doctors. Got my computer stuff done for this evening and having a bowl of chicken stew (made a crock pot full of the stuff IN ADVANCE)
Then the wacky taffy and off to the sack ..

  • 11:05:37 am on September 5, 2016 | 0 | # |

Yardie, not fun! Been there! Slow down and you won’t fall down.

I go in for back surgery tomorrow morning .. now days it is OUTPATIENT surgery. 35 years a go it took 4 days in the hospital and WAY too many days (months actually) in rehab.

  • 10:31:45 am on September 2, 2016 | 0 | # |

ain’t fun when the parts start failing!!

  • 08:26:25 pm on September 1, 2016 | 0 | # |

Got the ducks back in a row .. now to tackle the MASS of paper work that goes along with it! Ya need a secretarial staff and a lawyer just to figure out what they actually WANT in the way of info …
I have 3 print outs that I carry all the time. Medicines, what procedures I have gone through and general info, but some places require that info to be put on their SPECIFIC forms . total BS, but has to be done!

  • 09:41:16 am on September 1, 2016 | 0 | # |

    Ed, not here.

BTW, they moved my surgery up to NEXT WEEK. Now I have to rush to get the labs done and hope my “coach” can move her time .. (Coach=person that drives me home and checks on me for a few days.)

Think I can safely say that the problem with the track ball has been fixed. It is still functioning.

  • 01:00:48 pm on August 31, 2016 | 0 | # |

I can carry it without a problem. Even when it has everything except the Wacom on it and it is wired up. AND I just got a really nice USB desk lamp for it!!
I am debating PAINTING the desk .. but that would involve some partial dis-assembly .. just debating it yea/nay!!
That Power Block comes with 4 USB outlets .. which means that I don’t have to rely on the Laptop to power devices and I no longer have to plug and unplug as often to use USB devices that need to be plugged in directly for signal .. and I also have a Bluetooth receiver/USB as this older lappy did not come with Bluetooth.

I DO need to get a bigger hard drive for the laptop, though. Doing some serious shopping on the auction site, but, for some reason, they are selling the drives in pairs .. I don’t need 2 drives! A single one with a capacity between 500gb & 1TB will do!! I will eventually get one or I will buy a pair IF I can get them cheap enough!

Got a warm and misty summer rain going on right now .. everything smells fresh!

  • 07:10:09 pm on August 30, 2016 | 0 | # |

Trackball now working with a NEW receiver. Hope it stays that way!

Left it on overnite .. STILL WORKING .. I be a happy camper!!

  • 03:18:04 pm on August 29, 2016 | 0 | # |

Ed .. check yer mail .. shots there!

  • 12:00:09 pm on August 29, 2016 | 0 | # |

Will do .. hope to get the shots later this AM after the morning “paper work” is done.

(I got a new(er) lens for the Nikon .. picked up an all purpose “VR” or vibration reduction lens. Not as fast as my older all purpose, but less fuzzy shots.)

  • 07:56:43 pm on August 28, 2016 | 0 | # |

The project is DONE .. need to wait for some adhesive to dry and maybe to a minor tweak or three, but, for all intents and purposes, got the work station DONE.

  • 01:29:10 am on August 26, 2016 | 0 | # |

Well, actually got all the hardware I needed for the project .. this evening broke the temp mock up (done with velcro) down and got into the REAL hardware install .. all but the extension parts are DONE (need daylight so I can cut the aluminum out side) and it WORKS better than I thought it would. I can break this down and convert it to a BED table if need be!

Also a run to CostCo .. didn’t finish the stock up as the basket on the power chair got filled to overflowing .. so will have to go back as there were a few things I did NOT get.
Before that, went to Lowe’s (like it better than Home Depot as the aisles are not cluttered, the lighting is better. PLUS they give a Veteran’s discount.) Again with a power cart (another thing Home Depot does not have.)

BUT I completely zoned out when I got home .. did not realize how much energy I expended .. collapsed on the bed and woke up about 4 hours later. I REALLY will be glad when the operation is done and I get into therapy so I can regain some (I know not all) of my strength and stamina …

  • 02:55:48 pm on August 25, 2016 | 0 | # |

Final labs came back .. go back in 3 years.

  • 07:05:37 pm on August 24, 2016 | 0 | # |

    Ed, btdtgts.

Back from a couple of errands.
Got the rest of the wire up stuff I needed for the lappy project .. PRICES HAVE GONE UP .. what used to cost 10 bucks now costs 20 bucks and that is with professional discount!

But, did figure out what I need to do to make that extension STURDY. Now, if I can FIND what I need to get to make the parts in this burg!!

  • 03:08:52 pm on August 24, 2016 | 0 | # |

Ed .. device mangler is clean. Tried some software and a NEW receiver. It installs but can’t find the trackball. So exchanging eMails with the supplier .. no joy yet!

The work station is really coming along! FINALLY got the lappy at an angle where I can actually SEE the keys .. which was hard to do with a keyboard protector in place .. makes typing a lot easier both in vision and hand position .. can actually touch type on it now!

Got added cooling .. a power block with both AC and USB outlets (no longer have to use USB outlets on the laptop to POWER plug in devices! PLUS now only ONE power cord instead of THREE! .. got a powered hub installed, also.

Added space for the track ball, external DVD/RW (the internal one has a faulty board connection on the lap top and it was more expensive to get it repaired than to buy an enclosure and mount the drive in IT!.) AND, I now have a nice space to land my GPS units when I am servicing and upgrading them! PLUS a space for a small desk lamp.

Trying to figure out how to mount a flip up extension so I can utilize the Wacom pad on it .. think I got it .. now to find out IF they make the hardware or I may have to design and build that myself!

Once it is done, will post some photos .. it is kind of cool and it will fold up nicely for transport!

  • 10:32:24 pm on August 23, 2016 | 0 | # |

Been making a portable works station for my laptop .. turning out pretty good. Still thinking out some adds.
Still problems with the wireless track ball. Got me snowed right now.

  • 10:25:51 pm on August 23, 2016 | 0 | # |

Results of the follow up on my colon cancer .. everything has healed completely. Doctor showed me a picture of where the operation was and I could not see what she was talking about until she pointed it out .. really hard to see where the work was done ..
As to any problems .. NONE (still awaiting labs, but there were only 3 polyps vs 49 the last time!) The hassle of preparation far exceeded the experience at the hospital. That was a piece of cake, except for the LONG time spent in a very BORING recovery room. AND NO CELL PHONE ACCESS either.

  • 12:11:52 pm on August 16, 2016 | 0 | # |

Ed, been busy … EBay offered 500 free “buy it now” listings. 30 day listings, so moved stuff to the offer and added a bunch .. and the stuff is moving out the door! Gotta love that!

And, with my respiratory issues, NO WAY would I be smoking ANYTHING!

back to the sunshine .. and it is supposed to get HOT again over the next few days.

Rained on and off all nite and still doing so .. not heavy, but enough to get things WET. NEEDED!!!!!!!!!!

  • 05:37:37 pm on August 8, 2016 | 0 | # |

Whoa …. heaviest rainfall in WEEKS .. sheets of rain .. with RUNOFF. We were on the verge of drought conditions. Started lightly raining a couple of hours ago .. and has slowly increased to the point of a real soaker!!
Not been feeling all that good last couple of days .. just super tired. Spending too much time in the sack, but that is what my body is telling me to do.
Got a big pot of chicken soup started .. (AKA Jewish Penicillin) … maybe that will get me fired up again.

    Ed, September 13th.

Yardbird, I had the full blown surgery over 35 years ago .. 6 vertebrae and 4 disks. 4 days in the hospital afterwards and 13 MONTHS of occupational therapy! Yea. I DO know old school.
This Doctor is on top of things. Unlike the orthopedic clinic. the clinic would do ONE THING at a time and wait for results/feedback before going to the next step .. dragging things out!
This Doctor .. they called at oh-dark-thirty this am to schedule the PROCEDURE even before they get the Medicare clearances and my cardio Doctor and Primary Doctor have given their clearances .. even before I go to orientation (next week) …
BUT, conflict problem .. it would have been 4 DAYS after I go through another (follow up) procedure and WAY too close to my birthday (which I intend to celebrate this year as it is a milestone I NEVER thought I would reach.)

Knock me out — make a 1-1/2″ slit opening and then she will go in and remove the calcification and when I wake up, I go home!

I will LOVE it to get to the point of little or no pain WITHOUT taking anything .. and get more ACTIVE!

Just hope that includes being able to lift brother’s house chair in and out of the SUV .. I miss our visits to the ladies and the Sunday brunches A LOT!

  • 05:34:29 pm on August 4, 2016 | 0 | # |

Diagnosis: Spinal Stenosis. She showed me the MRI and X-Rays .. not pretty. It will be an outpatient procedure and she is getting the ball rolling. I go for an orientation Wednesday as the first step. She has to get clearances from a couple of my doctors .. schedule a couple of lab tests .. then the procedure gets scheduled .. once done, some physical therapy and I will be back at it. BUT, REAL restrictions of lifting … for the rest of my LIFE. They will evaluate those limits during therapy.

100% OK with her in the Cannabis for pain .. she commended me on getting that working and my choice to STOP USING OPIODS.

New receiver did not fix the problem!!

All of a sudden there are bunches of people showing up on the Logitech site and Win7/Win 10 site that are having the same trackball mouse problem as I have been having .. beginning to look like an update for Windows is the problem. Windows saying it will be mid August before they get it fixed.

  • 10:40:09 pm on July 29, 2016 | 0 | # |

Well, got a live body at Logitech .. it IS the receiver ….. so shopping a new one .. I can get by for now as I don’t have any GPS units to service at the moment. Those I have up for auction have already been down that road.

The items I sold today all are going out of the US through the EBay shipping program .. takes longer for the payments to land .. and I have had MOST of my non pay bidders come from that program!

Damian, this is an older lappy .. HP Pavilion dv9000. (originaly with Vista and upgraded to Win7.) It offers a MANUAL shut off of the touch pad when there is another pointing device installed.

Looks like the issue is the receiver! IF I unplug it, all functionality returns to the touchpad. (I hate that thing! WAY too sensitive and a general PITA for me to use.) Being a touch typist, the thing is in my way. So NORMALLY I have it shut off. Had to fire it back up when I started having this trouble a couple of days ago.

  • 11:56:44 am on July 28, 2016 | 0 | # |

Recommendation: Use the Logitech software for the unifying receiver, NOT the Win7 generic. Downloaded and done! .. now we shall see IF that was the issue. IF NOT, call back and get an RMA for the receiver.

still messing with it. Have disconnected the wireless track ball and now the touch pad is working and HAS been working for a while … so, looks like the receiver for the trackball may have gone south and in turn messed up the pad. Will get on the horn with Logitech tomorrow and get some help.

ran the hardware troubleshooter .. it found “something” (did not tell me what it found) .. will see!!

  • 11:12:34 pm on July 27, 2016 | 0 | # |

adding: the TOUCH PAD has the same problem! So it is NOT the devices!!

  • 11:00:02 pm on July 27, 2016 | 0 | # |

that didn’t work. I have run the bag full of cleanup programs.

It IS really strange .. I can re-boot and the thing works …. FOR A WHILE .. and then it just craps out.
I launch device manager, and without changing anything in DM, it works again .. but as soon as device manager times out, it dies again .. I can MOVE THE POINTER .. just can’t click on anything!

  • 07:25:24 pm on July 27, 2016 | 0 | # |

Weird problem on the lappy (Win7) .. the mouse works on boot up and it is fine for a while and then it will shut off the buttons! three finger salute opens task manager, but don’t have to DO anything and the buttons come to life again. as soon as the “clock” runs out, the buttons stop!

So running SFC to see if that fixes anything ..

update .. SFC found nothing! May have to do a repair install .. Doncha just LOVE Windows!!!

Actually got some sorely needed work done here! .. full service on all 3 air cleaners in the place … AND THEY REALLY NEEDED IT! Took some time and some planning to get to the units and get them into the bath tub without LIFTING anything heavy and getting myself into a bind .. but done!

Ed, as little as possible!! LOL .. First appointment with back surgeon on August 4th .. find out if the issue is OPERABLE or not.
Cancer follow up in a couple of weeks.
This back thing has completely shot my whole summer.

EBay offered 500 free listings over the last few days .. been taking full advantage of the offer. Lots of viewers, only a few buyers!!

Actually got out with brother yesterday for breakfast .. tried his new lightweight transfer wheelchair .. nice … BUT even the smallest of rise of a threshold is a MAJOR problem … and I over did it. Paying the price today, but it really felt good at the time. Got to see niece and deliver some goodies for her.

Been busy .. Doctors follow up appointments and such .. still more to come, but each time get a thumbs up .. gotta like that!!

Royal runaround … On Tuesday I had a large 40 pound package to ship out via FedEx (clearly marked as such). PLUS I had some small Priority Mail (USPS) items to go out .. Left the usual pick up notice in my mail box for the carrier to grab from the box on the porch. AND just before I was to go to FedEx, I put THEIR box on the porch in a completely different area so I could drive up and load it into the SUV without having to CARRY it.
In the period of time it took for me to walk out to where the SUV was parked and drive it around .. the USPS carrier showed up .. AND HE PICKED UP THE FEDEX BOX AS WELL! OOOOPSSS!
Wednesday AM I am at the PO with some documentation .. find out that this is a COMMON occurrence and that they have even set aside an area for FedEx AND UPS to pick up packages erroneously picked up!
BUT THE BOX WAS NOT THERE! Was told it was, most likely, already picked up.
Called FedEx .. they could not find it .. waited until this AM and called again .. no luck (did not have the tracking number as that is ISSUED when you drop the package off!) So the lady and I tried to find it using what information I DID have from EBay printouts. NO LUCK.
SO, just went to the closed auction to send a notice to my buyer and DING< DING< DING< … there was THE TRACKING NUMBER! It is in their system!!!!!
Really did not want to refund 125 bucks for a lost package that, without a tracking number, I could NOT get reimbursed!

All this when I awoke this morning with MASSIVE pain when I tried to walk … Cannabis to the RESCUE .. pain almost gone and I am still LUCID and my stomach is NOT upset with an Opioid! That S*** WORKS!

Dermo Doc gives me a clean bill of heath for now. Really gets to be a drag bouncing around to all of these specialists. Beats the alternative.

Maintainance guy here doing some minor work in the bathroom … perfect timing as I have a VERY large box that I have to load up to the SUV and get to FedEx before 3PM. (made a nice piece of change on this one!! LOL)
Dermatologist follow up on a minor surgery tomorrow. Follow up on last year’s cancer on Monday.

Well, there were several fires .. 2 caused by fireworks in Portland, but NONE here! BIG difference between now and last year.
